Service Subject: Hot Water Systems
When you book hot water work, you probably think about the tank, the price, and getting your home back to normal. The connections around that equipment matter too. They are part of the system that carries water into your home every day.
At Hot Tanks, professional press technology gives us another way to make those connections where the pipe, fitting, and application are suitable. Here is what it means, why we use it, and what you should expect from the work.
Watch: professional press technology
What is professional press technology?
Press technology joins compatible pipe and fittings with a powered press tool and the correct jaws. The tool compresses the fitting around the pipe to form the connection. The fitting includes a sealing element chosen for its intended use.
You may hear the name ProPress, which is Viega’s brand of press system. Different manufacturers have their own systems and requirements. A professional press connection uses matched components and tools; it is different from a push-to-connect fitting.
Why do we use it for hot water work?
It makes the joint without a torch. Pressing does not require an open flame to join the fitting. Around a hot water tank, that can be helpful when there are nearby walls, cabinetry, or other materials. It removes the torch from that joining step, while the rest of the job still needs normal care and protection.
It helps the connection work move efficiently. Once the pipe and fitting are correctly prepared, the press cycle is quick. That can help keep a replacement or repair moving. The complete appointment still includes assessment, equipment installation, checks, and cleanup; a quick joint does not mean those steps should be rushed.
It can help when the pipe is difficult to dry. Some approved press systems, including suitable Viega ProPress applications, can make connections with water remaining in the pipe. That is useful in circumstances where achieving the dry conditions needed for soldering would take extra work. The system must still be safely isolated for the job.
The tool is only part of a good installation
A press tool does not make preparation optional. The installer needs to assess the existing pipe, use suitable components, prepare the pipe ends, confirm the sealing element, and insert the pipe to the manufacturer’s required depth. Correct tools and jaws matter too.
After joining, the work needs inspection and the required testing. Features designed to help identify an unpressed connection are useful checks, but they do not replace the full test procedure. A professional result comes from the complete installation process.
Does every hot water connection need to be pressed?
No. The right method depends on the pipe material, equipment connections, access, condition of the existing system, and the fitting manufacturer’s approved application. A hot water installation may use more than one connection method.
Press technology also does not guarantee that a job will cost less. Fittings, tools, labour, and the work needed around the tank all affect the quote. The useful question is whether the proposed method suits your system and helps deliver a properly completed installation.
What should you ask before the work starts?
- Which connection method makes sense for my existing pipe and new equipment?
- Does the quote include the necessary connection changes around the tank?
- How will the completed work be inspected and tested?
- Are there existing pipe problems that need attention before the new equipment is connected?
You do not need to choose the tools yourself. You should be able to understand what is being changed, why that method is appropriate, and what is included in the service.
